In the early morning hours of March 10, 2019, the life of Eugene Jones, a 44-year-old Black/African American man, was tragically cut short in his Harper Woods, Michigan, home. Jones, known to friends as 'Short Dog' and remembered for his sense of humor, was a bus driver for the Detroit Department of Transportation. His death stemmed from a domestic dispute that ended in violence.

An altercation between Jones and Nija Starke, the 23-year-old mother of his child, escalated, resulting in Starke fatally shooting him. When Harper Woods police responded to the residence, they discovered Jones on the bathroom floor with a gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of medics, he was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The firearm believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered at the scene.

Nija Starke was immediately taken into custody. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office subsequently charged her with first-degree premeditated murder and a felony firearm violation. If convicted of the murder charge, she faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Starke was arraigned in 32-A District Court in Harper Woods, where her bail was set at $250,000. A preliminary examination was scheduled for later that month as the legal proceedings against her commenced. The incident left friends, family, and his DDOT coworkers to mourn the sudden and violent loss of a man they remembered as a great human being.
