In the early morning hours of May 19, 2019, the life of 40-year-old Jamie Thomas-Flowers was tragically cut short in her Muskegon Heights, Michigan, home. The female victim was shot and killed by her husband, Vashon Flowers, in a violent culmination of a domestic dispute. The argument that preceded the fatal incident reportedly began over cigarettes, as the couple had recently decided to quit smoking.
Police were initially called to the residence around 2:30 a.m. due to the argument, at which time Vashon Flowers gathered some of his belongings and left. However, he returned approximately four hours later, around 6:30 a.m., and forcibly entered the home by kicking in the door. Inside, he shot Jamie Thomas-Flowers four times in the torso. An adult witness who was on the phone with 911 dispatchers heard two of the gunshots.
After the shooting, Vashon Flowers fled the scene but later surrendered to the Muskegon Police Department. He was arrested and subsequently charged with open murder. Due to his criminal history, which included prior felony convictions for assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of a controlled substance, resisting police, and domestic violence, he was also charged as a four-time habitual offender.
The case proceeded to trial, and on March 13, 2020, a jury found Vashon Flowers guilty of first-degree murder. Following his conviction, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. During the court proceedings, the victim's son, London Thomas, emotionally lunged at Vashon Flowers in the courtroom and was subsequently held in contempt of court. The tragic death of Jamie Thomas-Flowers prompted a vigil organized by her family, who gathered with community members outside the Muskegon County Courthouse to honor her memory and call for justice.
