In the late hours of a June evening in 2019, the life of 34-year-old Detroit Police Sergeant Elaine Williams was tragically cut short in her Garden City, Michigan, home. On June 2nd, at approximately 11:45 p.m., police were called to her residence in the 200 block of Belton Street following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Williams inside, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics pronounced her deceased at the scene.

Johnson, then 35, was found outside the home with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. Earlier that evening, the couple had been out with neighbors at a local bar. After returning home, neighbors reported hearing the couple arguing, followed by multiple gunshots. One neighbor witnessed Johnson exiting the house with his gunshot wound. Investigators found eight. 40 caliber shell casings inside the residence, all fired from the service pistol issued to Sergeant Williams. Toxicology reports indicated that both Williams and Johnson had elevated blood alcohol concentrations at the time of the incident.
Johnson was taken to a local hospital for treatment and was subsequently taken into custody. During interviews with Garden City police, he claimed that he shot Williams during a struggle after she had shot him first. Initially, prosecutors charged Johnson with first-degree murder and felony firearm. However, the case took a different turn as it moved through the legal system. In a decision that drew protest from Williams' family and colleagues, a judge later granted Johnson bond.
Ultimately, on May 10, 2024, Johnson was offered a plea reduction and entered a no-contest plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter. In June 2024, he was sentenced to three years of probation. According to the plea agreement, if he violates his probation, he faces a prison sentence ranging from a minimum of 57 months to a maximum of 15 years. The felony firearm charge was dismissed as part of the plea deal. The prosecutor's office stated that due to both individuals being shot with the same weapon, the sequence of events was open to multiple interpretations, and given the burden of proof, they believed the plea deal was a just resolution.
