On a cold January day in 2020, the life of Kaneisha Williams, a 32-year-old Black female and devoted mother of three from Pontiac, Michigan, was tragically cut short. On January 22nd, Williams was fatally shot while desperately trying to escape from a man in the vicinity of North Eastway and East Pike. A neighbor witnessed the harrowing scene of her running towards their home, followed by the sound of multiple gunshots.
Despite the urgent efforts to save her, which included being rushed to the hospital in a deputy's patrol car due to the severity of her injuries, she succumbed to her wounds.
Kaneisha was remembered by her loved ones as an ambitious and loving mother who was building a life for her children, working as a medical billing coder and running her own beauty business. She had been making plans for a fresh start and was intending to move to Texas with her three daughters, who were 5, 12, and 14 years old at the time of her death. Her family and friends were left to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a woman they described as always striving to create a better future for her children.
The investigation into her murder quickly led authorities to identify 29-year-old Reuben Tompkins of Detroit as the primary suspect. However, before he could be apprehended and brought to justice, Tompkins fled to Mountain Brook, Alabama. There, he ultimately took his own life. A firearm was discovered with Tompkins, and subsequent ballistics testing confirmed it was the same weapon used to end Kaneisha Williams' life. With the death of the sole suspect, the homicide case was officially closed by authorities.
