In what should have been a period of newlywed bliss, a rekindled romance from decades past came to a tragic and violent end. Elizabeth McKalpain, a 67-year-old woman, was found deceased in her Sterling Heights, Michigan, condominium on March 2, 2020. Her death was the result of gunshot wounds in what authorities investigated as a murder-suicide.
Elizabeth and her husband, 66-year-old Herman McKalpain, had been friends in high school and reconnected later in life after they had both gone through divorces. Their renewed friendship blossomed into a romance, and they were married in May of the year prior to their deaths. Friends and family were shocked by the violent turn of events, as the couple had appeared to be very happy.
The grim discovery was made after a neighbor found Elizabeth's body inside the doorway of her home. Upon further investigation, police found Herman McKalpain upstairs with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation led authorities to believe that Herman shot his wife before taking his own life. Due to the nature of the incident, with the sole suspect also being deceased, there were no arrests made in connection with Elizabeth's death.
