In the early hours of May 16, 2020, the life of Jari Jua Jaafar, a 42-year-old Black male, was cut short in his Clinton Township, Michigan apartment. Police were called to his residence on Hickory Lane just before 2 a.m. to investigate a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered the front door unlocked and the distinct smell of fresh gunpowder hanging in the air.
Inside, they found Jaafar, the victim of a fatal gunshot wound.
Jaafar was a tattoo artist who operated his business out of his apartment, and investigators believe that several other people were present at the time of the shooting. It is thought that these potential witnesses fled the scene in the immediate aftermath of the incident. The circumstances surrounding the shooting and a motive have remained elusive to law enforcement.
In the days following the discovery of Jaafar's body, the Clinton Township Police Department appealed to the public for assistance. They urged anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it might seem, to come forward and speak with detectives. Avenues for providing anonymous tips were also made available through Crime Stoppers. Despite these efforts and the belief that there were witnesses to the crime, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been announced in connection with the death of Jari Jua Jaafar. The investigation into his murder remains ongoing.
