In the early hours of May 24, 2020, a tragic event unfolded on the east side of Detroit that claimed the life of 29-year-old Jamekia Fulton. The young woman was a passenger in a car being driven by her brother when gunfire erupted near Blackmoor Street and Eastwood Avenue. Jamekia, who was seated in the back, was struck by the bullets. Another female passenger in the front seat was also wounded in the attack. Though both women were transported to a nearby hospital, Jamekia succumbed to her injuries. Her brother, the driver, was not shot but was injured by shattered glass.
The incident was not a random act of violence. An investigation revealed that earlier in the day, Jamekia's brother had been involved in an argument and physical altercation with one of the alleged assailants. In the hours that followed, at approximately 3:30 a.m., two men reportedly approached the vehicle on foot and opened fire. The barrage of bullets that followed ended one life and forever altered others. Detroit Police officers on patrol in the area heard the gunshots and quickly discovered the targeted car stopped in front of a house on Blackmoor.
In the wake of the shooting, an investigation led to the identification and arrest of two suspects. Darnell Robinson, 22, and Edward Thoran, 24, were taken into custody. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office subsequently charged both men in connection with the fatal shooting. The charges filed against them were severe, including first-degree murder, assault with intent to murder, and multiple counts of felony firearm charges. The apprehension of Robinson and Thoran brought a swift, albeit initial, step towards justice for Jamekia Fulton and her family.
