The incident unfolded around 10:20 p.m. in the vicinity of 16th and Johnson streets, a moment that would forever alter the lives of those who knew and loved the young man. Authorities were called to the scene where they discovered Rowe suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Despite the immediate response and medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries, leaving a community to grapple with the senseless violence that had claimed one of its own.
The investigation into the death of the Saginaw male quickly led to a person of interest. Within days, the Saginaw County Prosecutor's Office issued a 10-count felony warrant for Joaquin 'Vasta' Thomas, a 28-year-old man from Saginaw. The charges against him were severe, including open murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and eight firearm-related offenses. This swift action by law enforcement brought a sense of imminent justice to a grieving community, as the focus shifted to apprehending the man believed to be responsible for the fatal shooting. The legal process that followed the arrest of Joaquin Thomas was a long and arduous journey for Stefan Rowe's family. After a two-year wait, the case finally went to trial in October 2022. The proceedings, held before Saginaw County Circuit Judge Darnell Jackson, lasted for three days and included the testimony of 19 witnesses. The jury deliberated for approximately three hours before returning with a verdict.
