Darius Jones Jr., a 19-year-old Black male from Detroit, Michigan, was found deceased on June 26, 2020. His body was discovered wrapped in a carpet inside an abandoned home on the 11800 block of Elmdale. The discovery was made after his family had been searching for him for nearly a week. Jones had been reported missing on June 21, 2020, and was last seen near Westphalia.
The investigation into his disappearance and death revealed that Jones had been the victim of a robbery and a fatal
shooting. His family, who had been actively searching for him, made the tragic discovery. His brother, a local comedian, and his grandmother publicly expressed their grief and called for justice. The community held a vigil to remember the young man, who was described as a loving and caring person.
In connection with the death of Darius Jones Jr., authorities arrested and charged Jahim Weathersby, who was 17 years old at the time of the incident. The charges brought against Weathersby by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office included felony murder, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and armed robbery causing serious injury. Court records indicated that at the time of the alleged crimes, Weathersby was on an electric tether for a previous carjacking case. While out on a reduced bond and GPS monitoring for that prior offense, he was denied bond in the murder case and remained in custody. Weathersby was also facing six additional felony charges related to another carjacking that occurred in July 2020.
