In the summer of 2020, the life of 18-year-old Shavonne Chanel Barnes, a young Black woman from Saginaw, Michigan, was tragically cut short. Known affectionately as 'Von Von,' she was a recent honors graduate from Saginaw High School's class of 2019, where she had been a dedicated member of the Girls Varsity Basketball Team. Ambitious and hardworking, Shavonne was already a team leader at Burger King and held a position at FedEx, embodying a bright future filled with promise.
On July 10,
2020, a seemingly ordinary day took a devastating turn. In the 400 block of S. 10th Street in Saginaw, a traffic accident involving Shavonne and another woman, 29-year-old Sierra Washington, escalated into a fatal confrontation. In the moments that followed the crash, an argument ensued, which tragically culminated in Washington shooting Shavonne. Despite efforts to save her, Shavonne succumbed to her injuries the following day, on July 11, 2020.
The aftermath of the shooting was swift. Sierra Washington was immediately arrested by law enforcement. The Saginaw County Prosecutor's Office filed charges against her, including open murder and possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony. The community was left to mourn the loss of a vibrant young woman whose life was just beginning. Shavonne was remembered for her bright eyes, beautiful smile, and her loving and ambitious spirit. Her death served as a stark reminder of how quickly a dispute can escalate into irreversible violence.
