In the light of a crisp November afternoon, a tragedy unfolded on a sidewalk in Wyoming, Michigan, that would forever alter the lives of a family and a community. Cynthia Jean McCoy, a 34-year-old Black/African American woman, was walking home on Friday, November 27, 2020, when her life was abruptly and violently cut short. At approximately 12:30 p.m., in the 900 block of Burton Street SW near the intersection of Alba Ave SW, she was shot.
The brazen act of violence happened in broad
daylight. An unknown male, estimated to be between 5'10' and 6'2' tall, approached Cynthia on foot. His face was obscured by a dark-colored COVID-19 cloth mask, and he was wearing dark clothing, including a dark blue hooded sweatshirt. After firing the fatal shots, the suspect fled the scene, running north on Alba Ave. It is believed he then got into a waiting gray or silver-colored sedan, which quickly sped away from the area. Cynthia Jean McCoy died from her gunshot wounds, leaving behind a grieving family, including her four children.
In the wake of the shooting, the Wyoming Department of Public Safety launched an intensive investigation into the homicide of Cynthia McCoy. Despite their efforts, no arrests have been made in the case, and the motive behind the senseless killing remains unclear. Investigators have reached out to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information to come forward. A reward of up to $2,500 has been offered for tips that lead to the person or persons involved. As part of their ongoing investigation, police have also sought to identify two vehicles of interest that were captured on surveillance footage in the vicinity of the shooting: a gray Chevrolet Malibu with black rims and a black BMW 5 Series. The community and law enforcement continue to seek justice for Cynthia, hoping that new information will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the individual responsible for her death.
