In the winter of 2021, the life of 43-year-old Bryce Grove was tragically cut short in Dowagiac, Michigan. On January 4th, his body was discovered at the Hillcrest Apartments, the victim of a fatal gunshot wound. The ensuing investigation would unravel a grim story of a volatile relationship that culminated in violence and a callous attempt to conceal the crime.
The primary suspect in Grove's death was his girlfriend, Deidra Tomlin.
Following a verbal altercation in her apartment, Tomlin pointed a 9mm handgun at Grove's face and fired, the bullet lodging in his brain. Rather than seeking medical help for Grove, Tomlin left him to die and proceeded to visit a local casino and Walmart. In the days that followed, she enlisted help in an attempt to dispose of his body, ultimately concealing it within a curbside trash container. A tip eventually led Dowagiac Police Officers to obtain a search warrant, where they discovered Grove's remains.
Tomlin was arrested a short time later in South Bend, Indiana. Initially, she denied her involvement in the murder but eventually confessed to pulling the trigger. Investigations revealed a history of violence in Tomlin's past, including previous assault charges and a pending case for firing a gun into a building. Family members of Grove recounted that he had expressed fears for his life just two months prior to his death, stating that Tomlin was going to kill him. Another individual, Jamie Loriot, was also arrested in connection with the crime for her role in assisting Tomlin after the murder.
Deidra Tomlin ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. In court, she claimed the shooting was an act of survival, alleging that Grove had entered her home unlawfully and that their relationship was tumultuous. However, the prosecution painted a picture of a heartless killing and a calculated cover-up. In August 2022, Tomlin was sentenced to a minimum of 20 to a maximum of 50 years in prison for the murder of Bryce Grove. Jamie Loriot received three years of probation for her involvement.
