In the early morning hours of Sunday, July 29, 2018, Fabian “Jimmy” J. Wesaw, Sr., a 42-year-old male and a member of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, was fatally shot outside the Beeson Street Bar in downtown Dowagiac, Michigan. Wesaw was an unfortunate bystander to a dispute that did not involve him. He was a father to three children, Amara, Cora, and Fabian Jr., and was a beloved member of his community.
The incident began with an altercation inside the bar, leading to
Rolandis Russell, 25, of Dowagiac, leaving the establishment. Following a confrontation with two individuals, Russell retrieved an AK-47 from a gas station across the street and fired 13 rounds into a crowd. One of these bullets struck Wesaw, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The senseless act of violence cut short a life and left a family and community in mourning.
In the wake of the shooting, Rolandis Russell was identified as the suspect and was subsequently arrested. He faced charges for the death of Fabian Wesaw. In a court hearing on September 10, 2019, Russell pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. The courtroom was filled with Wesaw's grieving family and friends, many of whom gave emotional statements about the impact of his loss.
On October 14, 2019, Rolandis Russell was sentenced to 43 to 65 years in prison for the murder of Fabian Wesaw. During the sentencing, the prosecutor emphasized the profound loss suffered by the community and Wesaw's family, stating that he should still be with them today. Russell submitted a letter of apology to the Wesaw family, expressing remorse for his actions. The lengthy prison sentence brought a measure of justice to a tragedy that deeply affected the Dowagiac community.
