In Monroe, Michigan, a 29-year-old woman's life was cut short on the evening of April 5, 2021. Katlynn Nicole Owens Hill, a mother of three, was fatally shot inside her apartment on Greenwycke Lane. Known to her loved ones as 'Kate,' she was remembered for her infectious laugh and outgoing personality. In the time leading up to her death, she had been focusing on her own business, Busy Bee Creations.
Her husband, Kevin Junior Hill, was present at the scene and was taken into custody.
Initially, the shooting was reported as a possible accident, with the theory that the gun discharged while Kevin Hill was cleaning it. However, as the investigation progressed, this theory was questioned by both law enforcement and Katlynn's grieving family. The family, initially believing it was a tragic accident, began to suspect otherwise and called for more serious charges.
Kevin Junior Hill was subsequently charged with involuntary manslaughter and felony firearm possession. It was revealed during court proceedings that he was already on probation for a prior weapon charge at the time of his wife's death. Investigators determined that the shooting occurred when Hill fired a semi-automatic handgun toward his wife while he was 'messing with' the weapon inside their apartment. Multiple unsecured firearms were reportedly found in the residence.
Ultimately, Kevin Junior Hill pleaded guilty to manslaughter. To spare the family the further trauma of a trial, a sentencing agreement was reached. He was sentenced to a prison term of 7 to 22 1/2 years for involuntary manslaughter and possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony. An assistant prosecutor noted the tragedy was 'easily avoidable' and resulted from the 'inexplicably careless mishandling of this firearm.' The sentence was intended to reflect the gravity of his negligence and serve as a message about the importance of safe gun handling.
