In March of 2023, the body of 23-year-old Kayla Belinda Sedoskey was discovered wrapped in a tarp at the abandoned Boysville Juvenile Facility in Frenchtown Township, Michigan. An autopsy later revealed that the young woman had been shot three times. Sedoskey, a member of the Saginaw Chippewa tribe, was described as a caring person who enjoyed being in nature.
The investigation into her death led to the arrest of six individuals.
Authorities believe that Sedoskey was lured to the deserted facility by Brin Smith under the pretense of spending time alone. Waiting for them were Steven Bails, Sierra Bemis, and Kaylyn Ramsey. It was there that Sedoskey was fatally shot. The motive for the murder remains unclear, but prosecutors have suggested it may have been a 'wedding present' from Steven Bails, Sedoskey's ex-boyfriend, to his new wife, Narena Bails.
Following the murder, Steven Bails, Brin Smith, Kaylyn Ramsey, and Sierra Bemis returned to the location to hide Sedoskey's body and use fragrances to mask the smell of decomposition. Alexander Feko was tasked with disposing of the handgun used in the crime. Narena Bails was reportedly listening to a police scanner at an apartment and was supposed to alert the others if law enforcement responded to the scene. Steven and Narena Bails, along with Smith, fled the state but were eventually apprehended by U.S. Marshals in North Carolina.
All six suspects faced charges for their roles in the crime. Steven Bails was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit homicide, receiving a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Brin Smith and Kaylyn Ramsey both pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and were each sentenced to 40 to 60 years in prison. Narena Bails and Sierra Bemis also pleaded no contest to second-degree murder. Narena Bails was sentenced to 13 to 30 years in prison, while Bemis received a sentence of 18 to 30 years. Both women testified against Steven Bails during his trial. Alexander Feko pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence and three counts of accessory after the fact to a felony, receiving a sentence of 5 to 10 years. He also testified against Steven Bails.
