On a tragic day in March 2022, the life of 63-year-old Cedic Fields, a female resident of Eastpointe, Michigan, was violently cut short. On Friday, March 25, 2022, Fields and her 57-year-old brother, Kenny Burks, were fatally shot in a brutal double homicide that stemmed from a domestic dispute.
The perpetrator was identified as Jerel McCrary, the 32-year-old ex-fiancé of Cedic Fields' daughter. The events leading up to the murders began with McCrary sending threatening text messages to his ex-fiancée, vowing to harm those she held dear. Following through on his sinister promise, McCrary went to Fields' home. In a chilling act, he initiated a video call with his ex-fiancée, forcing her to witness the horrific events that would unfold. While on the call, McCrary shot and killed both Cedic Fields and her brother, Kenny Burks.
Following an investigation into the heinous crime, Jerel McCrary was arrested and faced legal proceedings. His trial took place in Macomb County Circuit Court, where a jury deliberated over the evidence presented. After a five-day trial, on April 4, 2023, the jury found McCrary guilty on all counts. He was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder, which carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Additionally, he was found guilty on two counts of felony firearm, adding a consecutive two-year sentence to his punishment.
