In the spring of 2022, the life of 14-year-old Gavin Lee Blankenship was tragically cut short by an act of gun violence in Niles, Michigan. A Caucasian male, Gavin was born on April 18, 2008, in Mishawaka, Indiana. He was known by his family and friends as a protector, a prankster, and a lover of life who had a passion for football, basketball, baseball, and fishing.
He dreamed of one day becoming a tattoo artist, a testament to his artistic talents.
On the evening of May 12, 2022, Gavin was shot at the Arbor Trails apartment complex. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries. The senseless act sent shockwaves through the community, leaving a profound void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. In the wake of his death, a candlelight vigil was held in his honor, with many wearing shirts bearing the message 'LLG' for 'Long Live Gavin.'
The investigation into Gavin's death led to the identification of a suspect, Rease Pence. In a significant development, Pence, who was 20 years old at the time of the conviction, was found guilty of first-degree murder in connection with Gavin's shooting. This was not Pence's first encounter with the law; he was already serving a 122-and-a-half-year sentence for the murder of two women in South Bend earlier the same year.
The conviction brought a measure of justice for Gavin's family and the Niles community. Sentencing for the murder of Gavin Blankenship was scheduled for January 12. Because Pence was 17 at the time he committed the crime, the court may hold a hearing to determine his eligibility for a sentence of life without parole.
