On the morning of May 21, 2022, in White Lake Township, Michigan, a tragic sequence of events unfolded involving White / Caucasian teenager Drake Mancuso. The 16-year-old male had accompanied his friend, 20-year-old Cameron Duckworth, to the Cedarbrook Estates Mobile Home Park. The pair met with two other young men, 18-year-old Steven Dean Morrow and 18-year-old Jesse James Wright, who were acquaintances of the victims.
The group drove together to the mobile home community before agreeing to walk into a wooded area situated near a pond within the park.
Unbeknownst to Mancuso and Duckworth, the other two teenagers had allegedly devised a plan to rob them. Once the group reached the secluded location near the water, the robbery attempt turned violent. Morrow, armed with a pistol, fired multiple shots at both Mancuso and Duckworth. After the shooting, Morrow and Wright fled the scene in a vehicle driven by Wright, leaving the two victims behind. Authorities later determined that the perpetrators stole money, a backpack, and a watch from the victims before escaping to dispose of evidence.
White Lake Township police officers were dispatched to the area around 8:51 a.m. after receiving reports of an unresponsive person. Upon arrival at the edge of the pond, they discovered the bodies of Mancuso and Duckworth, both having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The discovery launched an immediate homicide investigation. Detectives utilized surveillance footage from the neighborhood, which reportedly showed Morrow peering into windows at a nearby residence the day prior, helping to link the suspects to the crime scene.
Both Morrow and Wright were taken into custody the following day, May 22, and held at the Oakland County Jail. Prosecutors initially charged both men with two counts of felony murder, two counts of armed robbery, and four counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony. During the legal proceedings, the details of the premeditated robbery came to light, with Morrow identified as the triggerman and Wright as the getaway driver.
As the case moved through the court system, the outcomes for the two suspects diverged. Steven Morrow pleaded guilty to the charges of felony murder and armed robbery. Due to his age at the time of the offense, he faced a mandatory "Miller" hearing to determine if a sentence of life without parole was appropriate. Jesse Wright, originally facing murder charges, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of being an accessory after the fact. Wright was sentenced to time served, having spent approximately 330 days in jail, and was ordered to pay restitution.
