In the late hours of September 20, 2022, the life of 18-year-old Yasmeen Scott was tragically cut short in her residence in Niles, Michigan. Yasmeen, a female, was fatally shot in what police have described as a mass shooting. The incident also claimed the life of 15-year-old Demi Galvin and resulted in injuries to three other individuals.
The shooting occurred when a group of people approached the house on North 6th Street and began firing into the residence before fleeing the scene. Investigators quickly drew connections between this fatal event and a string of recent gun violence in the same neighborhood. Authorities believe the shooting was an act of retaliation stemming from two earlier homicides in the area. The victims of those preceding incidents were identified as Farries Maxwell, who was killed on August 16, and Ra'Quon Glenn, who was shot and killed on September 8.
The City of Niles Police Department, in conjunction with the Berrien County Sheriff's Department and the Michigan State Police, has been investigating the interconnected acts of violence. Despite the ongoing investigation and public appeals for information from the community, no arrests have been made in the shooting that resulted in the deaths of Yasmeen Scott and Demi Galvin. In September 2024, the mother of Demi Galvin filed a lawsuit against the City of Niles and emergency services, alleging that potentially lifesaving measures were not administered to her daughter at the scene. The case remains unsolved, leaving the families and the community awaiting justice for the two young lives lost.
