The young father had just left his home, sharing a tender moment with his girlfriend and their baby boy, expressing his thankfulness for them before heading out to his father's house to pick up some hair clippers.
It was a simple errand on a holiday morning, one from which he would never return.
Just fifteen minutes after his departure, the family's world was shattered by a phone call. Parnell's sisters delivered the devastating news to his girlfriend – he had been shot. She rushed to the scene, a place that should have been filled with the sounds of a holiday but was instead cordoned off with police tape. There, she saw his car and his body lying on the ground. The tragedy was compounded by the fact that it occurred just two days before his son's first birthday, a milestone he would never get to celebrate.
In the wake of the shooting, a potential motive began to surface, one that involved the theft of two beloved family pets. Two days prior to the fatal shooting, the family's one-year-old English Bulldog, Nova, and their nine-month-old French Bulldog, Calley, had gone missing. Parnell had received information that the dogs had not simply wandered off but had been stolen. His family firmly believes that the theft of these dogs played a role in his murder.
Despite the ongoing investigation by the Detroit Police Department into the connection between the stolen dogs and the homicide, the person responsible for Antonio Parnell Jr.'s death remains at large. No arrests have been made in the case, leaving his family with unanswered questions and a profound sense of loss.
