Town Marshal J. T. "Jake" Trest, aged 52, tragically lost his life on June 2, 1979, in Walnut Grove, Mississippi. Marshal Trest was investigating a burglary and rape incident involving a 69-year-old woman at her home when he was attacked. The assailant overpowered Marshal Trest, seized his service revolver, and fatally shot him twice in the head as he lay on the ground by his patrol car.
