Chief Deputy Sheriff Charles Busby Smith, aged 29, tragically lost his life on January 12, 1981, in Montgomery County, Mississippi. On that fateful day, Chief Deputy Smith, along with Sheriff Billy Costilow, was attempting to serve a lunacy warrant to a 48-year-old man named Wadell Laney at his home near Kilmichael, Mississippi.
