On March 11, 1999, Prentiss County Sheriff's Deputy Michael Dale Hisaw, a 27-year-old male, was shot and killed in the line of duty. He was responding to a 911 call regarding a disturbance involving an armed man attempting a burglary at a residence on County Road 8401, located three miles northwest of Jumpertown. Deputy Hisaw was familiar with the suspect from previous encounters.
Upon his arrival at the scene, Deputy Hisaw observed the suspect leaving in a vehicle and initiated a
traffic stop. As he approached the vehicle and leaned down to speak with the driver, the suspect shot him three times with a 9mm handgun. Deputy Hisaw, who was not wearing a protective vest, suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.
The suspect fled the scene following the shooting. He was later found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Because the suspect took his own life, there were no arrests, charges, or trial in connection with the death of Deputy Michael Dale Hisaw. At the time of his death, Deputy Hisaw had served with the Prentiss County Sheriff's Office for three years and was the county's juvenile officer. He was not originally scheduled to be working on the day of his death but had responded to the call to offer assistance.
