On a late summer evening, the air at the Finish Line Drag Strip near Prentiss, Mississippi, was shattered by the sound of rapid gunfire. It was just after 11 p.m. on August 17, 2025, when the chaos erupted. When deputies arrived at the scene in the Lucas community, they found 17-year-old Gavin Fortenberry of Bassfield mortally wounded by a gunshot to the head.
