On a late summer evening, the air at the Finish Line Drag Strip near Prentiss, Mississippi, was shattered by the sound of rapid gunfire. It was just after 11 p.m. on August 17, 2025, when the chaos erupted. When deputies arrived at the scene in the Lucas community, they found 17-year-old Gavin Fortenberry of Bassfield mortally wounded by a gunshot to the head. The male teenager, a recent high school graduate who had trained at Camp Shelby and was preparing to join the Air Force, was pronounced dead. Four other people, three men and a woman, were also injured in the shooting but were expected to recover.
The investigation into the violent outburst moved swiftly, aided by crucial evidence from surveillance cameras at the racetrack. Law enforcement investigators worked through the night to process the scene, collecting evidence and taking statements from witnesses. According to investigators, footage showed a group of eight individuals moving together through the venue 'as if on a mission' before the shooting began. Authorities also indicated that the suspects in the case were known to be affiliated with a gang.
Within weeks, a series of arrests were made in connection with the shooting. Breyden Herron and Samuel Martin surrendered to the Jefferson Davis County Sheriff's Department and were both charged with murder. The U.S. Marshal Service apprehended Kendarrius Washington, Javontae Williams, and Jayden Williams. Washington and Javontae Williams were subsequently charged with aggravated assault. Another suspect, Javius Mikell, was arrested in Texas on drug charges and later extradited to Mississippi. Mikell was charged not only with Fortenberry's murder but also with an earlier, separate homicide in Prentiss and was held on a one-million-dollar bond. A seventh suspect, Gregory Harris, was also charged with murder and received a one-million-dollar bond. While most of the identified suspects were taken into custody, authorities reported that at least one remained at large.
