Detective Eric Tyrone Smith, Sr., a dedicated officer with the Jackson Police Department, tragically lost his life on April 4, 2013, at the age of 40. Detective Smith was conducting an interview with a murder suspect inside the Jackson Police Department's headquarters when the suspect attacked him. During the struggle, the suspect managed to disarm Detective Smith and fatally shot him with his own service weapon. The suspect then turned the gun on himself, ending his own life.
