Eric Tyrone Smith, Sr., a 40-year-old male, was a respected detective with the Jackson Police Department, known for his calm demeanor and dedication to his work. An 18-year veteran of the force and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he was a husband and a father to two sons.
His wife was also a sergeant with the Jackson Police Department.
On the evening of April 4, 2013, Detective Smith was conducting an interview with a murder suspect, 23-year-old Jeremy Powell. The interrogation took a violent and unexpected turn inside the third-floor interview room of the Jackson Police Department's headquarters. Powell, who was being questioned in connection with a recent stabbing death, managed to overpower Detective Smith and gain control of his service weapon.
In a shocking turn of events, Powell fatally shot Detective Smith before turning the gun on himself. The sudden and violent encounter left both men dead at the scene. The incident, which was captured on an interrogation room video, sent shockwaves through the law enforcement community and the city of Jackson. An investigation by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation confirmed that Powell had shot and killed Detective Smith before taking his own life.
