In the quiet community of D'Iberville, Mississippi, the life of 37-year-old Jamel “Mel” Jones, a Black male, was abruptly ended on the evening of January 31, 2015. Jones was found in the parking lot of the Amber Apartments, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The apartment complex, while technically possessing a Biloxi address, falls within the jurisdiction of D'Iberville.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to Marquis Saunders of the Bronx, New York.
Eyewitnesses at the apartment complex reported hearing several gunshots and seeing the shooter flee the scene in a white Ford Explorer. A neighbor was able to provide police with a description of the shooter and the vehicle's license plate number. This crucial information enabled Harrison County deputies, with the assistance of the D'Iberville police, to quickly locate and pull over Saunders on Mississippi 67, near D'Iberville High School.
During the subsequent trial, prosecutors established that Saunders was dating the sister-in-law of Jamel Jones. It was revealed that there had been ongoing arguments concerning 'infidelity issues' between Saunders' sister-in-law and another individual, which did not involve Jones himself. Despite this, Jones became the target of Saunders' violence. Evidence presented in court included testimony that Saunders was wearing a 5.11 Tactical shirt, commonly associated with law enforcement or military personnel, at the time of the incident. Gunshot residue was also found on both of his hands.
After a trial in Harrison County Circuit Court, the jury deliberated for less than two hours before finding Marquis Saunders guilty of the murder of Jamel Jones. Following the verdict, the judge sentenced Saunders to life in prison. In addition to the murder conviction, Saunders was also found guilty on a related charge of taking a motor vehicle, for which he received a five-year prison sentence to be served concurrently with his life term.
