In the festive aftermath of the St. Paul Carnival Association's Mardi Gras parade in Pass Christian, Mississippi, on February 7, 2016, a burst of violence shattered the celebratory atmosphere, leaving two men dead and four others wounded. Carlos Dewayne Bates, a 29-year-old man from Gulfport, was one of the two individuals who tragically lost their lives in the gunfire.
The incident unfolded on Davis Avenue, just a couple of blocks north of the parade route, where an estimated 50,000 people had gathered for the annual event.
Initial confusion gave way to panic as what some witnesses first mistook for fireworks was quickly identified as a volley of about 12 gunshots. When the chaos subsided, Bates and 43-year-old Isaiah Major III of Bay St. Louis were found deceased at the scene, their bodies lying tragically close to each other in the street. Both men were determined to be innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire of a dispute that had erupted shortly after the parade concluded.
The investigation into the deadly shooting led to the arrests of four men: Malcolm Joseph Dedeaux, Jessie Lee Williams Jr., Jermaine Rashad Ratcliff, and Donald Dedeaux. The group had reportedly confronted another man, Charles Johnson, in a crowded intersection. This confrontation escalated into an exchange of gunfire between the two parties, with stray bullets striking Bates and Major. Johnson and three other individuals were also wounded in the shootout.
In November 2017, justice was served for the victims. Malcolm Dedeaux pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter and was sentenced to 40 years in prison. His accomplice, Jessie Lee Williams Jr., also pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter and received a 20-year prison sentence. The tragic incident served as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of gun violence, turning a day of community celebration into one of profound loss and sorrow.
