In the quiet, wooded area of Tishomingo County, near Iuka, Mississippi, a domestic dispute on a Friday afternoon escalated into a prolonged and tragic event that would end two lives. What began as a call to law enforcement evolved into a tense, six-hour standoff with a man named Charles Lee Lambert, who had barricaded himself inside his home with his wife and 10-year-old daughter.
As negotiations wore on, the situation grew more perilous, prompting the involvement of a Mississippi Department of Public Safety SWAT team.
Among the members of that team was James Lee Tartt, a 44-year-old male and a decorated agent with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics. A 22-year veteran of law enforcement, Tartt had dedicated his career to combating the drug problems in the region and was honored as agent of the year in 2011. He was known by his family as a 'country boy' who loved to hunt and fish, and someone who was deeply committed to making the world a better place. Having recently married, he had just moved into a new home he had spent two years building.
After hours of unsuccessful negotiations, the decision was made for the SWAT team to enter the residence. As the officers breached the home, Lambert opened fire with a high-powered rifle. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, Agent Tartt was fatally wounded. Three other officers also sustained injuries in the shootout. The suspect, 45-year-old Charles Lee Lambert, was also killed in the confrontation. Both Tartt and Lambert died from multiple gunshot wounds. The woman and child inside the home were rescued.
The death of Agent Tartt, the fifth Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics agent to be killed in the line of duty in the agency's history, was a profound loss to his family, colleagues, and the state. More than a thousand people, including the governor of Mississippi, attended his funeral to pay their respects to a man described as a 'hero' by his wounded colleagues. A long procession of police vehicles escorted his body, with officers lining the streets in a final salute to their fallen comrade.
