On a Saturday evening in Jackson, Mississippi, the life of 22-year-old Elifelet Nunez Sanchez was tragically cut short. On March 5, 2016, Sanchez and his companion, Daniel Gomez, also 22, were outside on South Westhaven Drive when they were confronted by two armed men. The assailants demanded their money and belongings. During the course of the armed robbery, both Sanchez and Gomez were shot in their upper torsos.
Sanchez, a Hispanic male, died at the scene, while Gomez was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The incident, which occurred around 6:30 p.m., shocked the neighborhood. A neighbor reported that Sanchez and Gomez had been cooking in their front yard when a car with two Black males drove past and opened fire multiple times. The brutal double homicide prompted an immediate investigation by the Jackson Police Department, who began searching for the individuals responsible for the senseless act of violence.
In the days following the shooting, authorities identified one of the suspects as Anthony Harris. Warrants were issued for his arrest on two counts of capital murder. The police continued to investigate the double homicide, seeking to identify the second individual involved in the robbery and killings. As of March 11, 2016, Harris was still at large, and the investigation remained ongoing as police sought to bring justice to the families of Elifelet Nunez Sanchez and Daniel Gomez. There is no publicly available information regarding the apprehension of Anthony Harris or the identification of the second suspect.
