On a spring day in 2016, the life of 24-year-old Iesha Magee was tragically cut short. On May 7, 2016, in Lamar County, Mississippi, just outside of Hattiesburg, Magee was shot and killed. Her death prompted a swift law enforcement investigation that soon centered on another young woman.
Breanna Conerly, a 26-year-old from Columbia, was identified as the suspect in Magee's death and was subsequently arrested and charged with murder. The case proceeded through the legal system, and just days before her murder trial was set to begin in July 2018, Conerly entered a guilty plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter. This plea brought a resolution to the case, though it could not undo the events of that fatal day.
The court accepted her plea, and Conerly was sentenced for her role in the death of Iesha Magee. While the legal proceedings have concluded, the community is left to remember a young life lost to violence.
