In the late hours of a Saturday night in September 2016, a violent sequence of events in Itta Bena, Mississippi, led to the death of 27-year-old Juan Conrod of Moorhead. The incident, which law enforcement officials characterized as an attempted robbery gone wrong, also resulted in the death of another Moorhead man, 21-year-old Lavensky McGee.
According to the Leflore County Sheriff's Department, Conrod, wearing a mask and armed with a gun, had planned to rob an individual who was known to be collecting a debt. During the robbery attempt, an exchange of gunfire occurred between Conrod and Lavensky McGee. In the chaos, Conrod fatally shot McGee.
Following the initial exchange, as Conrod lay wounded on the ground, Lavensky McGee's brother, Tyon McGee, allegedly retrieved a weapon and shot Conrod in the head. Two other individuals, Raphael Luckett and Tavaris Pitts, were also wounded in the incident, both suffering gunshots to the leg. They were subsequently transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson for treatment.
