In the late evening hours of February 13, 2017, the city of Clarksdale, Mississippi, became the scene of a brutal crime that claimed the life of 32-year-old Earl Baines. The male victim was discovered at the intersection of East Tallahatchie Street and Hicks Street around 6:45 p.m., having been shot multiple times and subsequently struck by a vehicle. Investigators at the scene believed that Baines had been shot at a different location before being left in the street where he was then run over.
The initial investigation into Baines's death led police to search for a silver or gray car that was believed to have front-end damage. The motive for the killing was not immediately clear to law enforcement. The tragic event left Baines's family, including his pregnant girlfriend and his mother, in a state of profound grief.
Within a week of the incident, the Clarksdale Police Department made significant progress in the case. On Saturday, February 18, 2017, authorities arrested 25-year-old Darryl Thompson in connection with the murder. Two days later, on Monday, February 20, a second suspect, 35-year-old Christopher Johnson, was also taken into custody. Both men were charged with the murder of Earl Baines. Following their arrests, Thompson's bond was set at $500,000, while Johnson's was set at $1 million.
