In the quiet community of Toomsuba, Mississippi, a horrific discovery was made on the morning of Tuesday, February 21, 2017. Responding to a welfare check at a home on Butts Road, Lauderdale County deputies uncovered a scene of immense tragedy. Inside the residence, 27-year-old Kiearra Durr, a female, was found deceased, the victim of a brutal shooting. She was not alone. Her mother, 65-year-old Edna Durr, her 42-year-old sister, Tomecca L.
Pickett, and her 5-year-old nephew, Owen Pickett, had also been fatally shot. Miraculously, Kiearra's three-year-old daughter was found physically unharmed amidst the devastating scene.
The investigation into the quadruple homicide quickly pointed towards a domestic element. Suspicion fell upon Karon McVay, the boyfriend of Tomecca Pickett. Investigators learned that McVay and Tomecca had been involved in an altercation at her workplace the day before the murders. It was revealed that McVay had visited Tomecca at Rush Hospital in Meridian where she was having lunch with her brother. The encounter escalated to the point that hospital security was called. The day of the murders, McVay was reportedly at the scene when law enforcement arrived, a detail that would later be presented in court.
Within a short time, Karon McVay was arrested and charged in connection with the four deaths. In November 2018, a Lauderdale County grand jury indicted McVay on four counts of capital murder for the deaths of Kiearra Durr, Edna Durr, Tomecca Pickett, and Owen Pickett. He was also charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. The evidence presented during his trial painted a grim picture of the events that transpired. Autopsy reports revealed that Kiearra had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and sharp-force injuries. Her mother and sister also died from multiple gunshot wounds, while young Owen had succumbed to stab wounds.
Karon McVay was ultimately convicted by a Lauderdale County Circuit Court jury on all four counts of capital murder and the firearm possession charge. For each of the murder convictions, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, with the sentences to be served consecutively. In May of 2024, the Mississippi Court of Appeals affirmed his convictions, ensuring that the man responsible for the deaths of Kiearra Durr and her family would remain behind bars.
