In the quiet community of Toomsuba, Mississippi, a horrific scene unfolded in February 2017, shattering the peace and leaving a family decimated. Tomecca Pickett, a 42-year-old female, was found shot to death in her home alongside her 5-year-old son, Owen Pickett, her 65-year-old mother, Edna Durr, and her 27-year-old sister, Kiearra Durr. The discovery was made on a Tuesday after neighbors became concerned when they couldn't get an answer at the house.
Authorities believe the killings occurred the night before their discovery. A younger child, Kiearra's 3-year-old daughter, was found physically unharmed at the residence.
Investigators found no signs of forced entry, leading them to pursue numerous leads in the search for a suspect. Their investigation led them to Karon McVay, Tomecca Pickett's boyfriend. Evidence presented in court revealed a troubled relationship between the two. The day before the murders, McVay had a confrontation with Tomecca at her workplace, Rush Hospital, where she had told him she was going to have security ban him from the premises.
Karon McVay was subsequently arrested and charged with four counts of capital murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. During the investigation, McVay confessed to the killings, providing a chilling account of the events. He stated that after an argument with Tomecca, he went to her home and shot all four victims. He was found guilty on all counts and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for each murder, to be served consecutively, along with an additional ten years for the firearm charge. McVay later appealed his conviction, arguing that prior bad acts were improperly introduced during his trial, but the conviction was affirmed.
