In the late hours of a Sunday in November 2017, a young Indian man's life was tragically cut short in what police believe was a robbery gone wrong in Jackson, Mississippi. Sandeep Singh, a 21-year-old male, had been in the United States for about four years, having initially arrived on a tourist visa before obtaining a work permit. Originally from Jalandhar, India, he was standing outside his residence with two other men when they were confronted by a man whose face was obscured by a mask and a hoodie.
The assailant, armed with a 9mm pistol, demanded their money and cellphones. After the victims complied, the robber began to flee the scene. It was then that he turned and fired shots, one of which struck Sandeep Singh in the stomach. His companions were unharmed in the incident. Singh was rushed to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries the following day, marking the city's 58th homicide of the year.
Jackson police described the suspect as a Black male last seen wearing a gray hooded shirt. Investigators suspected the shooting was not an isolated event but rather connected to a series of armed robberies that had been plaguing the northwest Jackson area. The perpetrators of these robberies were known to cover their faces with bandanas or masks and wear hooded sweatshirts and gloves to conceal their identities. Despite the ongoing investigation and pleas to the public for information, no arrests in the shooting death of Sandeep Singh were publicly announced. The gunman who ended a young man's life for the contents of his pockets seemingly vanished into the night.
