In the summer of 2018, the life of one-year-old Kamaya Lloyd was cut tragically short in what became a devastating murder-suicide. The events unfolded on July 5, 2018, when her father, 23-year-old Lavonte Lloyd, abducted her and her mother at gunpoint from a home in Cruger, Mississippi. While Kamaya's mother was left behind, Lavonte fled with their young daughter, sparking a frantic multi-county police chase.
The pursuit stretched for 30 miles through the Mississippi Delta.
Law enforcement officers from Holmes and Leflore counties followed Lavonte's truck as it sped toward Sunflower County. The chase came to an abrupt and horrific end when his vehicle crashed into a ditch near Moorhead. Before deputies could intervene, Lavonte fatally shot his daughter Kamaya and then turned the gun on himself. When officers finally reached the disabled truck, they discovered the bodies of both father and daughter inside.
The tragedy was preceded by a series of escalating domestic disturbances. In the days leading up to the murder-suicide, Kamaya's mother had sought legal protection, filing for a domestic violence injunction against Lavonte. This action was prompted by his increasingly erratic behavior, which included taking Kamaya from her daycare without permission and attempting to break into the mother's home. Despite these efforts to ensure her child's safety, the legal order had not yet been served at the time of the fatal kidnapping. Lavonte had previous arrests for domestic violence, though those charges did not result in convictions.
