In the early morning hours of September 23, 2018, the life of 31-year-old Greg Hawthorne was tragically cut short in his Hattiesburg, Mississippi, home. A Black / African American male, Hawthorne was discovered deceased by police who were responding to a report of a shooting at his Cypress Avenue residence at approximately 2:30 a.m. Preliminary autopsy results later confirmed that his death was a homicide.
The investigation into Hawthorne's death quickly centered on his 22-year-old
girlfriend, Anquanette Alexander. She was identified as the primary suspect and was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder. The nature of the shooting was determined to be domestic-related. Following her arrest, Alexander's bond was set at $250,000. In connection with the case, another Hattiesburg resident, 41-year-old Nikarra Duncan, was charged with obstruction of justice.
Further details emerged about Alexander's past, revealing a prior criminal record. She had previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy in the 2015 shooting deaths of two Hattiesburg police officers. For that crime, she had received a deferred five-year sentence with the stipulation that the conviction would be cleared if she avoided any other felony charges during that period. Her alleged involvement in Hawthorne's death, however, constituted a violation of those terms.
