In the late hours of a Thursday night in Greenville, Mississippi, tragedy struck 25-year-old Elijah Sawyer. On September 27, 2018, Sawyer was in the 500 block of North 6th Street when a black SUV approached. Gunshots erupted from the vehicle, fatally wounding him and injuring a 22-year-old man who was with him. Both victims were rushed to Delta Regional Medical Center, but Sawyer succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital. The second victim was treated for his injuries and subsequently released.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a motive rooted in a prior conflict involving Sawyer. Law enforcement officials believe that a previous altercation led to the deadly confrontation. Following the incident, the Greenville community was left seeking answers as authorities worked to piece together the events of that night.
The investigation led to a swift arrest. Thirty-six-year-old Bryant Netters was taken into custody in connection with the shooting. He was charged with one count of murder for the death of Elijah Sawyer, as well as attempted murder for the injury of the second victim. Additionally, Netters faced a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, indicating a prior criminal record. The arrest brought a sense of progress in the case, though the legal proceedings would be the next step in the pursuit of justice for Elijah Sawyer.
