In the quiet of a Carroll County evening on March 1, 2019, a birthday celebration turned into a scene of unimaginable violence, leaving 44-year-old Jim Harrell dead. The gathering, held at Harrell's own home, was in honor of his friend, Marlee Jones Barnhill. What began as a festive occasion with friends descended into chaos when Marlee's husband, Michael Martin Barnhill, became intoxicated and belligerent.
The conflict began when Marlee attempted to prevent her husband from driving
drunk by refusing to give him the keys to their vehicle. Enraged, Michael Barnhill retrieved a. 40 caliber handgun from the truck. He first confronted his wife, slapping a cigarette from her hand before shooting her in the chest. As Jim Harrell and his wife, Brooks, rushed to Marlee's aid, Barnhill turned the weapon on them. Jim Harrell was shot as he tried to defend Marlee. Brooks Harrell was also shot and fatally wounded as she attempted to help her husband. Two other guests at the party fled upstairs to protect the Harrells' young son, who was asleep in his room, barricading themselves in a closet until help arrived.
In the aftermath of the horrific events, Michael Martin Barnhill initially left the scene, only to return later, feigning ignorance about what had transpired. However, he was identified by the surviving witnesses as the shooter and was taken into custody. Barnhill, who was 30 years old at the time, was charged with three counts of homicide and two counts of attempted murder.
In November 2019, Michael Martin Barnhill pleaded guilty to the murders of Jim Harrell, Brooks Harrell, and Marlee Jones Barnhill, as well as the attempted murder of another individual present at the party. By entering a guilty plea, he avoided a capital murder charge and the possibility of the death penalty. He was sentenced to serve three consecutive life sentences, in addition to 20 years, under the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections. The tragic event left the community in mourning and the Harrells' two sons without their parents.
