In the winter of 2019, a tragic event unfolded in the city of Waynesboro, Mississippi, that cut short the life of 13-year-old Zachary Bernard Bishop Jr. On the evening of December 20th, the young male was inside an apartment complex, engrossed in a video game, when his life was abruptly ended. A stray bullet from a drive-by shooting pierced the building and struck him, ending what should have been a long and promising life. The senseless act of violence also resulted in injuries to two other individuals, casting a somber shadow over the community.
In the weeks that followed the devastating incident, law enforcement worked to bring justice for Zachary and the other victims. Their investigation led them to 27-year-old Antonio J. Mitchell. In January 2020, about a month after the fatal shooting, Mitchell turned himself in to the authorities. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Zachary Bernard Bishop Jr.
The charges against Mitchell did not end there. He also faced five counts of aggravated assault and two counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling, reflecting the gravity and recklessness of the crime that not only claimed a young life but also endangered several others. Following his surrender, Mitchell was taken into custody and held at the Wayne County Adult Detention Center as he awaited legal proceedings.
