In the spring of 2020, the life of 41-year-old Duel Vincent Bryant was cut short in Purvis, Mississippi. On the evening of Wednesday, May 20, police were called to a disturbance on Shelby Spike's Drive. Initial reports suggested a man had been struck in the head with a pipe. However, upon their arrival, law enforcement discovered a more tragic scene. While one man was indeed injured, Duel Vincent Bryant, a male resident of Purvis, had been shot at least once.

The investigation into Bryant's death quickly led to an arrest. A 17-year-old, Lois Ann Hughes, was taken into custody and charged with murder. Authorities stated that Hughes was related to the man who had been assaulted with the pipe, suggesting a possible connection between the two violent acts that transpired that evening. Following her arrest, Hughes's bond was set at $250,000.

In the months that followed, the legal process began to unfold. By July of 2021, court and jail records indicated that Lois Ann Hughes was being held in Lamar County. A felony bench warrant had been issued for her arrest due to a violation of the terms of her bail agreement. In light of this, her bond was revoked, and she was to be held without the possibility of release pending further court proceedings. The public record does not contain further information regarding a trial or the ultimate resolution of the murder charge against her.
