In the summer of 2021, the life of 39-year-old Robert Alan Blackburn, a male construction worker, came to a tragic end in Corinth, Mississippi. On the morning of June 23rd, deputies from the Alcorn County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a local residence following a report of a disturbance. Upon their arrival, the first deputy encountered Blackburn, who was armed with a knife.
Despite the officer's attempts to de-escalate the situation using a taser and pepper spray, Blackburn fled into a nearby wooded area. The situation remained tense as law enforcement awaited his reemergence. Approximately 30 minutes later, Blackburn reappeared from the woods, still in possession of the knife. When another deputy attempted to use a taser to subdue him, Blackburn reportedly lunged at the officers with the knife raised. In response to the perceived threat, one of the deputies discharged their firearm, striking Blackburn.
Following the shooting, the deputies on the scene immediately began administering first aid to Blackburn until emergency medical services arrived. He was then transported to Magnolia Regional Health Center, where he was pronounced dead. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was called in to take over the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
The investigation aimed to determine the appropriateness of the use of force by the deputies involved. Ultimately, the incident was classified as an officer-involved shooting, and no arrests or charges were filed against the law enforcement officers. Robert Alan Blackburn, born in Tupelo, Mississippi, on December 17, 1981, was survived by his parents, siblings, and step-sons. A memorial service was held at a later date to honor his memory.
