In the summer of 2021, the life of 19-year-old Brandon Swain was tragically cut short by gun violence in Cleveland, Mississippi. On the evening of July 26th, a shooting occurred on Roosevelt Street that resulted in Swain's death. The incident prompted an investigation by the Cleveland Police Department, which soon identified two individuals as persons of interest in the young man's homicide.
Warrants for murder were issued for Malachi Butler and Derrick Harris. The two men managed to elude authorities for a time, leading to a search that extended beyond state lines. In September 2021, their time on the run came to an end when U.S. Marshals located and apprehended them in Dallas, Texas. The capture was a significant development in the case, bringing a sense of hope for justice to those mourning Swain's loss.
Following their arrest, the process of extradition began to bring Butler and Harris back to Mississippi to face the charges against them. They were booked into the Bolivar County Regional Correctional Facility. Court records from September 2023 indicated that both Malachi Butler and Derrick Harris were awaiting trial for the murder of Brandon Swain. Butler's bond was set at $750,000, while Harris was held without bond.
