In the late hours of a Tuesday night in Coahoma, Mississippi, on August 10, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace and irrevocably altered the lives of several families. When deputies from the Coahoma County Sheriff's Department arrived at the scene of the shooting, they discovered a tragic scene with multiple victims. One of the victims, a 14-year-old male named Zymarious Smith, was gravely injured.
Emergency responders rushed Zymarious to a hospital in nearby Clarksdale, but his
injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead. Also killed in the incident was 51-year-old Regina Smith Hopkins, who was found deceased at the scene. Two other individuals were wounded in the shooting, adding to the somber toll of the evening. The violent event sent shockwaves through the small rural community, leaving residents in a state of disbelief and sorrow.
In the days that followed the shooting, the Coahoma County Sheriff's Office, in conjunction with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations, launched an intensive investigation. Their efforts led to the arrest of three suspects in connection with the double homicide. The individuals taken into custody were identified as 30-year-old Jerry Seamster, 23-year-old D'Amonte Abrams, and 24-year-old DeAngelo Abrams.
Each of the three men was charged with two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault for their alleged roles in the shooting that claimed the lives of Zymarious Smith and Regina Smith Hopkins and injured two others. Following their arrests, they were booked into the Coahoma County Jail in Clarksdale, where they were held without bond as they awaited further legal proceedings.
