On a summer afternoon in Lamar, Mississippi, a violent confrontation tragically cut short the life of 37-year-old Tarvis McKell Shields of Slayden. The incident unfolded on July 5, 2022, at the M&W Quick Stop gas station located on U.S. Highway 72. Shields, a truck driver for Shields Brothers Trucking, was involved in an altercation with 28-year-old Demarcus Pate.
The argument, which began inside the convenience store, escalated when both men moved outside and exchanged gunfire around 2
p.m. Shields was fatally wounded and pronounced dead at the scene. Pate sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
In the wake of the deadly shooting, the Marshall County Sheriff's Office confirmed that they were not seeking any other suspects. Investigators concluded that the fatal exchange was a spontaneous event and that Shields and Pate were the only individuals involved. Authorities have classified the case as a mutual altercation that resulted in a double fatality, and subsequently closed the case with no arrests made. Tarvis Shields was a member of the Hudsonville CME Church and was remembered by his community.
