In the early morning hours of December 14, 2022, Sergeant Steven Michael Robin, a 34-year-old male, was on duty in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. A dedicated and passionate officer with the Bay St. Louis Police Department, he responded to a call for a welfare check at a local Motel 6. He was joined by Officer Branden Estorffe. The purpose of their visit was to check on a woman and a young child who were found sitting in a parked vehicle. For about half an hour, the two officers spoke with the woman, Amy Brogdon Anderson, a veterinarian from Ocean Springs.
The situation took a tragic turn after the officers, concerned for the child's well-being, made a call to child protective services. Shortly after this request was made, Anderson opened fire on both officers. Sgt. Robin was fatally wounded during the exchange. Despite being mortally wounded himself, Officer Estorffe managed to return fire, killing Anderson at the scene. Initial reports suggested Anderson had taken her own life, but investigators later clarified that she was killed by Estorffe's return fire. The child in the vehicle was not physically harmed during the incident.
Sgt. Robin had been with the Bay St. Louis Police Department for three years and had a total of twelve years in law enforcement, having previously served with the Hancock County Sheriff's Department and the Waveland Police Department. He was known as a leader who mentored younger officers and was respected for his dedication to his profession. Beyond his service, he was a family man, survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. His loved ones remembered him for his kind and humble nature and his particular fondness for Walt Disney World. His end of watch was December 14, 2022.
