On an early Sunday morning in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, what began as a joyous after-prom celebration ended in tragedy, forever altering the lives of many young people and their families. De’Arreis “DD” Smith, an 18-year-old male, was among those whose bright futures were violently cut short on April 30, 2023. Smith, a senior at Hancock High School, was looking forward to his upcoming graduation and had plans to join the military. Described as a loving and happy person who enjoyed making others laugh, his death has left a profound void in the lives of his family and friends.
The festive atmosphere of the party, held in the 1000 block of Old Blue Meadows Road, was shattered when gunfire erupted. In the ensuing chaos, six teenagers between the ages of 15 and 18 were struck by bullets. Smith sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to University Medical Center in New Orleans, where he succumbed to his injuries. Another Hancock High student, 16-year-old Haeleigh Stamper, also tragically lost her life in the shooting. The senseless act of violence sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community, leaving friends and family to grapple with the devastating loss of two young lives.
In the hours following the shooting, law enforcement identified a suspect, 19-year-old Cameron Everest Brand of Pass Christian. He was arrested at his home and has been identified by police as the sole shooter in the incident. Brand was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder and four counts of aggravated assault. He has been held in the Hancock County jail without bond on the murder charges. A Hancock County grand jury later indicted Brand on all six counts.
As the legal proceedings against Brand began, his defense attorney filed a motion for a change of venue, arguing that extensive pretrial publicity would make it impossible to select an impartial jury in Hancock County. The defense also introduced new claims, suggesting that one of the victims was armed with a shotgun and had allegedly made threats against Brand prior to the shooting. Despite these claims, Brand remains incarcerated, awaiting his trial.
