William Jacob “Jake” Giles, often recorded as Jakob Giles in modern records, was a 46-year-old white male sheriff of Jefferson County, Texas, when his final assignment took him far from home and into the path of a deadly conspiracy. In March 1916, he traveled to Kansas City, Missouri, to retrieve a fugitive named Paul V. Hadley, who was wanted back in Beaumont on a charge of assault with intent to kill.
