In early 2019, concern began to grow for 37-year-old Joseph Hellman, who had not been seen or heard from since January 29, 2019, in Omaha, Nebraska. A resident of Council Bluffs, Iowa, his absence became alarming enough that he was officially reported as a missing person on February 21 of that year. The initial search and investigation into his whereabouts would soon take a dark turn, shifting from a standard missing person case to a homicide investigation by December 2019.
The circumstances surrounding his disappearance pointed to a violent end, and authorities began to focus on foul play as the primary theory.
The investigation revealed that Hellman's disappearance was allegedly linked to a drug transaction that had gone wrong. According to court documents, a man named Dalton Dukes had purchased what he believed to be methamphetamine from Hellman, only to discover the substance was fake. It is believed that Dukes then tracked Hellman to a residence in Omaha, in the 3900 block of Fort Street, with the intent to confront him. Witnesses at the location reported hearing a single gunshot before seeing Dukes leaving the house with what they believed to be a body. This altercation proved to be the last time anyone reported seeing Joseph Hellman.
In February 2020, Dalton Dukes was formally charged with the murder of Joseph Hellman. The subsequent legal proceedings brought to light more grim details of the case. Prosecutors alleged that after the shooting, Dukes drove to a campground in Iowa and submerged a vehicle, with Hellman's body believed to be inside, into the Missouri River. Despite these claims and the ongoing investigation, Joseph Hellman's body has never been located. Dalton Dukes was later sentenced in connection with the killing.
