Omar Mendez, aged 16, was fatally shot on April 14, 2011, in Chicago, Illinois. The homicide occurred in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, a part of Chicago that had seen a troubling number of violent incidents at the time. Omar was one of many young victims of gun violence that year, contributing to a total of over 430 homicides in Chicago in 2011.
